Yossi Matias is Vice President, Engineering & Research, at Google, and the founding Managing Director of Google Center in Israel. He is a world-renowned expert in AI and in leadership of global scale innovation.
Yossi is the global lead of Google’s Health AI. He is the global lead of Google’s Crisis Response initiative, providing AI-based actionable information (including wildfire detection and flood forecasting – on Fortune’s “Change The World” list). He is on Google’s Sustainability board and a founding lead of Google’s AI for Social Good initiative. Yossi pioneered Conversational AI innovations, transforming the phone experience (including Google Duplex, Call Screen, Hold for Me, Live Caption, Live Translate, Euphonia, Read Aloud). He pioneered an initiative of bringing online hundreds of heritage collections, seeding Google’s Cultural Institute. For over a decade Yossi was on the leadership team of Google’s Search, building and leading global efforts including Google Trends, Google Autocomplete, Search Console, and Search vertical experiences.
Yossi is the Head of Google’s Center in Israel, which he established and grew to over 1600 on staff. He is on the board of IATI – the Israeli Advanced Technology Industries – and Chair of its Multi National Companies Forum. He is the founding exec lead of Google for Startup Campus Tel Aviv, of Mind the Gap, and of Google for Startups Accelerator which supported thousands of startups globally.
Prof. Matias is also on the Computer Science faculty at Tel Aviv University, and previously a Research Scientist at Bell Labs and visiting professor at Stanford. He published over 100 papers and is the inventor of over 60 patents on diverse areas, including pioneering work on internet privacy, contextual search and big data. Yossi is a recipient of the 2005 Godel Prize, an 2009 ACM Fellow, and a recipient of the 2019 ACM Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award for seminal work on the foundations of streaming algorithms and their application to large-scale data analytics.
